The Center for Research in Advanced Materials (Centro de Investigación en Materiales Avanzados, Cimav) is one of the 26 institutions coordinated by the National Council of Science and Technology (Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología, Conacyt). It was created on october 25 in the city of Chihuahua, Chihuahua.
Among its areas of competence are materials, energy and the environment.
Its strategic objectives are:
- To carry out research, development and innovation in science and technology with criteria of excellence in the areas of materials, energy and environment with the aim of boosting the country’s development.
- To form high-level human capital in the areas of specialization through postgraduate studies programs.
- To provide technological and innovative solutions to the productive, academic and social sectors through services, assessments, consulting and generation of technological development.
General Director
The institution is based in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, it has a branch in Monterrey, Nuevo León; an external academic department in Durango, Durango, and a representation office in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. Cimav collaborates with national and international universities in the formation of excellent human resources thus obtaining an important record of graduates that work in the productive sector in the area of their profession.
In addition to this they offer services to national and international micro, small, middle and big-sized companies, to the export industry as well as to state-owned companies.
Currently Cimav is positioned as a leading institution in the country and it seeks to be a national referent in its areas of competence.

Cimav is recognized as a public research center under the Law for the Promotion of Scientific and Technological Research.
The Law of Science and Technology is enacted, through which Conacyt becomes the Sector Coordinator of the system of public research centers, one of which is Cimav.
